Do not use fused 4-plug extension leads plugged into other fused 4-plug extension leads to overcome a lack of electrical sockets for PC’s and associated equipment. Other equipment requiring relatively high amperages, e.g. kettles and heaters, could also be connected which could exceed the capacity of the single 13 amp socket and result in a fire. If you need more electrical wall sockets in rooms, contact Estates Services urgently to arrange this. There may be a cost involved providing new sockets, but the costs of not doing so could be a lot higher.

Amended Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations are likely to be issued this year with a new Code of Practice, requiring employers to survey all non-domestic premises occupied by them, and in which persons work, to assess whether asbestos is, or is liable to be, present. Estates Services are to survey all University buildings this year, in anticipation of the legal requirement, to establish the extent of the problem. Surveys will identify surface materials containing asbestos, but not asbestos hidden behind surfaces. Contact Estates Services if you need work done in your department that requires drilling, or removal, of wall or ceiling panels.
